On our final full day in the Amazon, we decided to try to pack in as many things as possible. With so much to see in this land of the highest diversity of plants and animals, we ourselves diversified our day to try and experience as much as possible. Whether by skiff or kayak, ship or foot, in a village or forest, huge river or narrow stream, we experienced an incredible amount today.
An early morning skiff ride continued our string our wildlife excursions. Sloths and monkeys, parakeets, and flycatchers, vibrant flowers and tall trees, all were enjoyed before breakfast. The village of Zapote was our destination a bit later, and what an interesting place it is. The waters of the rivers have inundated most of the village, but they are used to it. For them, it happens every year. Everything is built on stilts, including the schools, houses, store, and even the chicken coop. With no land to wander about or play on, many of the kids are in canoes. As we entered, an armada joined us, and we were warmly welcomed. What a cool place!
After traveling for quite awhile retracing our path back down the Ucayali River, we arrived at the small stream known as Iricahua. Here we went for a sunset skiff ride and enjoyed more amazing sights. A group of saddleback tamarins were feeding on fruit, and their appetite was stronger than their concern for us, so we enjoyed prolonged close views. The noises they made were incredible, and their acrobatic jumping was a joy for all. As we returned to the Delfin II for our final dinner, a fiery sunset and distant lightning storm lit the sky and helped fill our memory cards.
