We woke this morning to find National Geographic Resolution back in the pack ice. During breakfast we drove the ship deep into a large pan of ice and put the gangway down. Once the staff had scouted and secured the area, we were able to walk on the ice among the beautiful blue pools of surface meltwater. This was an exceptional opportunity, and we were very fortunate to be able to take advantage of the perfect weather and ice conditions. The hotel department even brought out champagne so we could toast this magnificent landing.
During lunch, we cruised along the ice edge and soon found a polar bear with a recent kill. The captain brought the ship in very slowly, but the bear decided that he didn’t want to share his seal, so he hid it behind an ice ridge. With that, we left him to his spoils and continued our exploration.
After dinner, our Greenlandic staff member, Lars, gave a fascinating presentation about life as an Inuit before introducing and interpreting the movie, Nanuk of the North. It was another wonderful day aboard National Geographic Resolution!
