This day was dedicated to our magnificent cetacean friends, the gray whales. We awoke just as the full moon was setting over the sand dunes and with hardly any wind, we knew a good morning of whale watching was in store. The gray whales are incredible survivors and at one time were nearly hunted to extinction in these select lagoons in that they use as breeding grounds. We saw numerous cow and calf pairs as well as had multiple very close interactions with these friendly creatures. Each expedition landing craft was guided by a local “Pangero” who were all extremely familiar with the waters and carries a whale watching license. After a successful day of observation, we were serenaded by “Los Coyotes” a local group of musicians from the nearby town of Lopez Mateos.
