Just another amazing day! No rain and we are ready to explore the forest along the Ucayali river. Tis morning we are looking for parrots form the smallest parakeets to large, loud and colorful macaws. The shore of the Ucayali River is also home to many types of raptors, egrets, and wood peckers. This morning we want all of them!
At 0600 am is time to board our fleet of skiffs and begin our journey. Certainly, birds like the first light of the morning if you are not there at that time you may have lost a lot of them! Our first sightings were red bellied macaws as part of their routine they begin flying around their roosting as warming up before setting their journey to foraging grounds that happen to be miles away. The place is noisy as parakeets and macaws perform their songs.
In the afternoon we planned our exploration at Dorado River. The waters here are black because it flows through the forest pulling tannins out of dead leaves of trees. Our ride began in the late afternoon in order to see life forms that are active in day light and life forms that are active in the night such as frogs, bats, night hawks and caimans! The highlights of Dorado River are not just the variety of animals of the region but also the landscape at sunset, the large lagoons glow together with the sky.
