Just after sunrise, Sea Cloud glided up to her anchorage position between the islands of Rineia and Delos in the northern Cycladic Islands. Following breakfast, guests were whisked ashore on the ship’s Zodiacs to pursue guided walking tours of the vast archaeological site with Greek guides, Kriton and Eleni.
We took advantage of the early morning calm and first visited the residential district from Roman times, including the impressive remains of the Greek Theater. We then proceeded to the ancient Sanctuary Site of temples and memorials, commemorating the birthplace of Gods Apollo and Artemis. Fortunately, the site museum had finally reopened after a renovation that took several years, so we could view and appreciate the statuary and other fine artworks from the archaeological excavations.
During the afternoon, we enjoyed a photography presentation by Linda Burback on composition in expedition photography. The captain brought us with all speed to arrive in the Bay of Katapola, Island of Amorgos, just before sunset. It was a much-appreciated special surprise for guests that we had the opportunity to go ashore for an experience of Aegean life after dark on the Greek Islands.
