We ventured out anyway to view wildlife and explore Washington State’s Friday Harbor. In 1859, an American farmer on San Juan Island shot and killed a large pig in his garden. The incident evolved into military escalation between the United States and Great Britain, and after this bloodless war, the San Juan Islands were awarded to the U.S.
