Kos
We woke up at the port of Kos crowned by a medieval castle. Kos is so close to Turkey that you can even see the houses over there. We started our tour visiting the castle of the Knights of St. John. We had no idea of their presence here. We learned a lot about the order and its history and how they found their way here as we admired their marvelously constructed castle. This was a nice break away from ancient antiquities.
We then visited Hippocrates plane tree. Kos is the birthplace of the first physician who detached medicine from religion and made it a science. He sat under this plane tree to instruct his students.
Then strolling around the town we could see excavated sections of the ancient city. Kos was a flourishing mercantile center in early Roman times and many wealthy people lived here. We saw the market area, sat on the Odeon and talked about ancient drama. We admired the mosaic floors and the starting line of the stadium. It’s nice walking through a buzzing town with shops, churches, mosques and then suddenly to be in a grove with antiquities – a very different experience.
Sailing away from Kos we did some vase painting, decorating pottery with ancient designs. We then stopped at the island of Pserimos for swim. We thoroughly appreciated the kayaking as well.
