Syros

Aeolus, the god of the wind, decided for us late last night that Delos was not to be our destination. Poseidon agreed and at breakfast we found ourselves moored inside the deep protected harbor of Hermoupolis, where we started our day of explorations. This bustling city of commerce offered another perspective of Greece for us. Each island has had a unique flavor and charm, the flavors lately have tasted a lot like gelato.

While this city historically was known for its great shipyards, today it was a magnificent playground. In the spirit of historical accuracy, we held a beach Olympics. Okay, maybe it was not so historically accurate, but it was hysterically fun. There were the warm-ups which entailed in-the-water handstands, the volleyball game which had some challenged by a stiff breeze, the trading-partners-wheel-barrel race and the soccer game. After a good sweat and a liberal coating of sand, there was a great rush for the water topped off with an aquatic piggyback wrestling match. There were no gold medals awarded, but there were definitely golden moments experienced this past week by the kids and families that decided to travel, explore and learn together in the Greek isles.
