What curious creatures! Upon arrival on Hood Island today, the endemic mockingbirds greeted us with their familiar boldness. Although today, that attitude fringed on cheekiness! Sure enough, several of us had several of them alight upon our heads, bags, shoulders, hands and in the case of our unsuspecting photographer: heels!!!

Once upon a time, many of the bird species of the Islands would land on the first humans arriving here. These animals had no fear of humans and didn't realize the damage these voracious predators could cause. Humans, in their conquest of the earth, soon changed this fearlessness in many of the birds. They still come VERY close today and even land on us… but what I would give to go back in time and spend a day being the first human to set foot in Galapagos!
