Manuel Antonio National Park, Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Our first day on the Sea Voyager provided us a handful of emotions. As we arrived, the rainforest was our exclusive experience. Being the first visitors of the day allowed us to listen to the early songs of the barred antshrikes, and even find a yellow crowned night heron still foraging in the darker areas of the forest; dawn is extended under the shades of the magnificent trees. The loud gnawing of the Central American agouti gave us an opportunity of finding it among the leaf litter as we were heading to the sloth valley. Advancing in Manuel Antonio National Park was not easy. The different species of animals that we were able to see made it a longer journey. White faced capuchins amused us for a long time while a lone male mantled howler monkey only crossed the treetops as with a set direction, and a male three toed sloth slowly moved in the canopy above the trail.

We came back aboard to start voyaging south. A humpback whale surprised us early in the season as a premature migrant. Drake’s Bay was our destination for an afternoon at the Agujitas River. Kayaking and Zodiac cruising up the river took us to a wonderful freshwater swimming spot in the middle of the rainforest.
