After breakfast, we went deep and far into the Pacaya River, the farthest destination we will have on our expedition this week. A constant rain and drizzle accompanied us in the first hours of exploration. The latter reminded us that we are in fact in one of the wettest ecosystems on Earth.
Our three skiffs arrived at a large black water ox bow lake called Yanayacu Lake. We stopped there momentarily to stretch our legs and use toilet facilities. After it, we continued with our exploration. One of the skiffs had a very brief sighting of a giant river otter. We all had amazing sightings of many cayman alligators—some of the black caymans were huge! Several red howler monkey troops and the beautiful Hoatzin birds were observed as well.
At midday, we had a picnic lunch on a Rangers’ station at Yarina Lake. After that we came back to the ship. It was a long adventure with all the ingredients of a memorable expedition.
