Last night Delfin II arrived to the farthest destination we visit during this expedition—upstream of the Ucayali River, and far deep into the Pacaya-Samiria National Preserve. In order to make the most of this fantastic place, we left our ship early morning to explore at dawn. We carried with us a food and extra staff, so that we could enjoy a full breakfast in the middle of the forest. Early morning here is truly the best time of the day. The temperature is fresh, and the light is just perfect.
At the beginning of our excursion, we were surprised to find the tallest flying birds of South America, the jabiru storks, just arriving from a long trip from the coast to take advantage of the fast receding waters of the low water season, when fish are plentiful.
On our way back from our afternoon outing, we were delighted to spot the bright, almost full moon peeking over the forest. A perfect escort to accompany and illuminate our return back to the ship, after another perfect day exploring the upper Amazon.
