Kia Ora from the Sub-Antarctic Islands!
We are at sea again as we make our way to the next Sub-Antarctic Island of the trip, Macquarie Island. Everyone is excited, as an astounding number of seabirds visits Macquarie each year – up to 3.5 million! The island is a unique wildlife reserve and is important for its geological value, as it rises from tectonic activity that brings out rocky features from the Earth’s mantle. This is the only place in the world where you can directly experience geological features from 6 km into the ocean!
As we approached the island, there was plenty to keep us entertained. We enjoyed excellent presentations on the area’s wildlife and history to tips for improving our photography. This time around, we even enjoyed a guest lecture by Lewis Henry Mitchell, the Creative Director of Character Design from Sesame Street.
